MLC Supports AHDB's "Right Start, Right Carcase, Right Market" Lamb Roadshow
MLC was pleased to support AHDB's Right Start, Right Carcase, Right Market lamb roadshow in Hertfordshire on 21st July, joining around 25 sheep farmers for a practical and informative event focused on improving carcase value and market returns.
The day featured a range of presentations covering genetics, market analysis, a virtual butchery demonstration and an interactive question-and-answer session, helping producers understand how decisions made throughout the production chain influence the value of finished lambs.
Representing MLC, Steve Peaty and Lyndon Roberts selected five lambs demonstrating a range of specifications, from fat class 2 to 4H and conformation grades O to U.
During MLC's presentation, Steve and Lyndon explained the independent services MLC provides within the abattoirs where it operates, including:
Independent carcase classification
Fat classification
Verification of dressing specifications
The importance of presenting carcases to the declared dressing specification and the potential impact on producer returns where this is not achieved
The session generated plenty of discussion, with farmers asking questions throughout and sharing their own experiences. The interactive format provided an excellent opportunity to explain how classification and dressing specifications influence the value of a carcase and why independent oversight gives producers confidence that recognised standards are being applied consistently.
Following the presentation, attendees moved to a practical demonstration where Steve and Lyndon highlighted the key assessment points on a sheep carcase before inviting the group to examine the five live sheep. Farmers discussed their own observations and estimated classifications, comparing these with the animals' eventual carcase outcomes and gaining a better understanding of how live assessment translates to the finished product.
The event was well received and provided a valuable opportunity for MLC to engage directly with sheep producers, answer questions and promote a greater understanding of independent carcase classification and dressing specification verification.
