MLC Supports Two Successful Knowledge-Sharing Events in Cornwall
MLC recently supported two successful industry events at Kepak’s Bodmin site, bringing together farmers, processors and industry partners to improve understanding of carcase classification and strengthen relationships across the supply chain.
Live to Dead Day – 24th February2026
The first event, a Live to Dead Day, was organised in collaboration with AHDB and attended by more than 35 farmers. The day provided a comprehensive, end-to-end insight into the journey from live animal to classified carcase, with MLC playing a central role throughout.
The morning began with presentations from Rhiannon Thomas of Kepak and Steve Hamilton of MLC, who outlined key principles of livestock selection and classification.
Steve Hamilton then led a practical session in the lairage, demonstrating how cattle are assessed live and explaining how conformation and fat cover are evaluated prior to slaughter. In the afternoon, attendees entered the slaughter hall to observe the resulting carcases and see how classification is applied in practice.
This hands-on approach, led by MLC, gave farmers valuable insight into how on-farm decisions directly influence grading outcomes.
North Cornwall Grassland Society Visit – 17th March 2026
MLC also supported Kepak Bodmin in hosting members of the North Cornwall Grassland Society for an evening visit on 17th March. The group, made up of local farmers who meet regularly during the winter months, focuses on sharing knowledge and exploring topics that directly impact their businesses.
Following refreshments and an introduction from the Bodmin team, guests received an in-depth presentation that included a detailed explanation of carcase classification delivered by Steve Hamilton of MLC.
The group then moved into the slaughter hall, where five carcases with varying conformation and fat cover were presented. Steve provided a thorough comparison of each, helping attendees understand how differences affect classification outcomes.
A highlight of the evening was an engaging tenderloin breakdown demonstration by Darren Pearce, which prompted lively discussion and questions from producers.
Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, with one participant commenting:
“The tour was very informative and showed us how important it is to have a good relationship with you as a processor.
It was so lovely to see lots of staff, all who were helpful and great to listen to. It’s also lovely to see many staff who have been there for several years. It’s not something you see much of nowadays and just shows how lovely the company and its staff are.”
Supporting Knowledge and Industry Collaboration
Through its involvement in both events, MLC continues to play a key role in supporting knowledge transfer, improving understanding of classification, and helping farmers make more informed decisions.
Working in partnership with processors such as Kepak, MLC remains committed to strengthening transparency and collaboration across the red meat supply chain.
