Felliscliffe Young Farmers Learn About Carcase Classification

Deputy Operations Manager, Sam Taylor recently attended the Felliscliffe Young Farmers meeting, where around 30 enthusiastic members gathered for an informative evening focused on pig, cattle, and sheep classification.

The warm and welcoming club invited MLC to deliver the talk ahead of their upcoming stock judging competition on Sunday 19th October. The session covered all aspects of livestock grading and the important role that MLC plays as the only independent provider of classification in the UK.

Sam explained how MLC ensures impartial carcase assessment, accurate weight verification, and compliance with dressing specifications across all species, providing producers with trusted, transparent documentation.

Attendees had the chance to see pig probes in action, with a demonstration on how these tools are used to measure backfat depth. The group also explored the EUROP grid for beef and sheep, learning how to assess carcases accurately and consistently.

A key discussion point was the upcoming change to sheep carcase classification and price reporting, which will become mandatory from January 2026 for all abattoirs in England processing more than 2,000 lambs per week. Sam outlined the two approved dressing specifications that processors will be required to follow.

The evening was both well-attended and well-received, with plenty of questions from the audience and a strong interest in MLC’s literature and resources.
